The Conservancy
has acquired 3,000
acres in conservation
easements and 600
acres in fee to protect critical riparian habitat throughout the Upper Cosumnes River Basin. Protection of the river basin is guided by the Upper Cosumnes River Basin Strategic Plan, which serves as a blueprint for acquisitions and easements that will eventually protect thousands of acres of sensitive riverfront lands, and connect them with existing public lands throughout the watershed.

The project represents a key part of a larger effort to preserve an intact, landscape-scale ecosystem, running the entire 80-mile length of the Cosumnes River, from its headwaters in the Eldorado National Forest to its confluence with the Mokelumne River in California's Central Valley.

The Cosumnes is the last river on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada without a major dam.
